With the period detail and profound resonance of Memoirs of a Geisha, this lyrical and emotionally charged novel digs into one of the most puzzling of human relationships: female kinship.

Reviews of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

The story is narrated by Lily who is presently an elderly person in her eighties. She has carried on with her life without limit and wants to the narrative it and couldn’t care less for what others will make of the story. The story starts during the fifth year of Lily’s life when she realizes that being a young lady in ancient China meant that your family thought of you as a ‘futile branch’. However, It is heartbreaking that a tyke so youthful takes such a major realization and manages to endeavor hard to create preferred open doors for herself rather than leaving herself to her fate as her sister did.

I was amazed at the amount of importance given to female kinship. Laotongs and sworn sisters are considered as family. Ladies are viewed as visitors in both their natal homes as well as their husband’s homes. However, they are required to wait on each family part’s hand and foot, accept abuse and starvation, and are constantly berated by the individuals who are higher in the social hierarchy and must suffer everything quietly. The tone of the whole story was upbeat although the characters experience more pain than pleasure.

    2. Rating 4.5/5

A pearl of a book, a staggering tale of companionship and what it means to be a woman. However, this is the tale of Lily, who at eighty years and known as “one who has not yet passed on”, embarks to tell about her life, and most importantly, her association with her companion Snow Flower. At the age of seven, she and Snow Flower are paired in an emotional match that will last a lifetime, called a laotong, or “old same.” They learn to communicate through a secret language created by Chinese ladies called nu shu, sharing the delights and distresses of life in remote nineteenth-century China.

This book removed me totally from my reality and into Lily’s, which is so not quite the same as anything I have known. I delighted in reading about the many rituals and traditions practiced in China around then – a portion of the beautiful and some barbaric. However, the author’s attention to research and detail is obvious in each page,
