In 1942, Lale Sokolov arrived in Auschwitz-Birkenau. He was given the job of tattooing the prisoners marked for survival – scratching numbers into his fellow victims’ arms in indelible ink to create what would turn into some of the potent symbols of the Holocaust.

Ready in line to be tattooed, terrified and shaking, was a younger lady. For Lale – a dandy, a jack-the-lad, a little bit of a chancer – it was love at first sight. And he was decided not solely to outlive himself, however, to make sure this lady, Gita, did, too.

So begins some of the life-affirming, brave, unforgettable, and human tales of the Holocaust: the love story of the tattooist of Auschwitz.

    Evaluate quote

a honest…shifting try to talk the unspeakable * The Sunday Instances * What a rare and essential ebook that is. We want as many reminiscences of the Holocaust as we will retain, and it is a shifting and finally uplifting story of affection, loyalties and friendship amidst the horrors of battle. I’m so glad Lale and Gita have been finally in a position to reside lengthy and glad lives collectively, and grateful that Heather Morris was moved to report their unbelievable story. It’s a triumph * Jill Mansell.
